What are the typical warranties for current modules?
And for the next 10 years?
1️⃣ Product Warranty:
This represents the number of years during which the manufacturer commits to replacing the module if it malfunctions due to defects in materials or workmanship. Depending on the manufacturer, it may not cover transportation or labor costs.
Currently, the median product warranty is 15 years.
2️⃣ Performance Warranty:
In case the modules degrade more than expected, the manufacturer commits to compensating for the affected modules. Compensation can also vary depending on the manufacturer and may only cover the percentage of degradation based on the module's price.
This is typically expressed with three parameters:
- Warranty duration: Currently, the median is 25 years.
- Degradation during the first year: Median of 2 %.
- Annual degradation until the end of the warranty: Median of 0.45 %.
🔮 According to the International Technology Roadmap for Photovoltaics (ITRPV), as seen in the chart, it is expected that warranties will improve to varying degrees over the next decade:
➕ Product warranty from 15 to 17 years.
➕ Performance warranty duration from 25 to 30 years.
➕ Degradation during the first year from 2 % to 1 %.
➕ Annual degradation from 0.45 % to 0.40 %.
✅ Translating this to what really matters, it means that warranties will cover 20 % more generation over the next decade.
